Calne in Bloom

Continuing our series of posts highlighting important trees of Calne, we now turn our focus to the two rings of Scots Pine trees on the upper mound of Castlefields Park. The inner circle of Scots Pines were planted to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. The planting of these trees is not mentioned as part of the town's celebration, which resulted in an Oak tree planted at The Green. Perhaps this indicates that the planting was a private endeavour. The outer circle of Scots Pines were planted to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2012. This circle was planted by the Marquis of Lansdowne. A plaque to commemorate these plantings was created and placed by the volunteers of  Castlefields Canal and River Park in October 2012, who took after Castlefields with great care. We send a massive  congratulations  to Rob Mercer and the Calne Town Council Grounds Team for their success in attaining the first Green Flag Award for Calne. The cemetery site has met the international standard in the following areas: A Welcoming Place Healthy, Safe and Secure Well Maintained and Clean Environmental Management Biodiversity, Landscape and Heritage Community Involvement Marketing and Communication Management Rob Mercer, Calne Town Council’s Amenities, Conservation & Sustainability Manager said, “ The Grounds Team carry out the maintenance of this space with the greatest respect to those who are laid to rest in Curzon Street Cemetery. It is an honour to receive Calne’s first Green Flag Award and is an example of the standards that we working to set across all of the town’s green spaces. ” This is likely to be the first of many sites in Calne that the Council will look to gain recognition for via the Green Flag scheme and shows the dedication of the staff an...
